What happens if you pay your credit card bill after the due date? RBI's 3-day rule, credit card late payment charges at SBI, HDFC and Axis, interest, and how a missed credit card payment affects your credit score

Your credit card due date was yesterday, and you forgot. Or the money came in a few days late. Either way, the bill is now overdue.

How bad is it? That depends on how late you pay and how much you pay. Paying one or two days late is very different from paying a month late. Here's exactly what happens when you pay your credit card bill after the due date, day by day.

What is the credit card payment due date?

The payment due date is the last day to pay your credit card bill without penalties. It's printed on every statement, usually about 15 to 20 days after the statement date.

To avoid a late fee, you need to pay at least the minimum amount due by this date. To avoid interest too, you need to pay the total amount due.

One thing people often miss: what counts is when the payment reaches the bank, not when you make it. Some payment methods take a day or more to credit, so a payment made on the due date itself can land late.

What happens when you pay after the due date

Within 3 days of the due date: the RBI buffer

RBI rules give you a small safety net. A bank can charge a late payment fee, or report your account as "past due" to credit bureaus, only if your payment is more than 3 days late.

So if you missed your credit card payment by 1 day, and you pay at least the minimum due within 3 days of the due date:

  • No late payment fee

  • No late payment mark on your credit report

But this buffer covers the late fee and credit reporting. If you didn't pay the total amount due by the due date, you still lose your interest-free period, and interest may apply. Check your bank's Most Important Terms and Conditions (MITC).

After 3 days: the late payment fee kicks in

Once you're more than 3 days late, the bank can charge a late payment fee. It's a flat charge based on how much you owe, plus 18% GST. RBI rules say it can only be charged on the amount still unpaid after the due date, not on your whole bill.

Interest on the full balance

If you haven't paid the total amount due, credit card interest applies on the unpaid balance, usually from the date of each original purchase. That's typically around 3.5% to 3.75% a month (over 40% a year), plus 18% GST. New purchases also attract interest from the day you make them, until you clear the full balance.

Your credit score takes a hit

If the minimum due is still unpaid more than 3 days after the due date, the bank can report your account as past due to credit bureaus. Payment history is the biggest factor in your credit score, so even one late payment can bring it down, and it stays visible in your credit history for years.

The longer it goes unpaid, the worse it looks. Lenders see accounts as 30, 60 or 90+ days past due, and each step signals more risk.

If you miss more than one cycle

  • Extra charges. Some issuers, including SBI Card and Axis Bank, add an extra ₹100 if the minimum due is missed for two billing cycles in a row.

  • Card restrictions. The bank may block or suspend your card until the dues are cleared.

  • Collections and default. If dues stay unpaid for a long time (typically 90 days or more), the account can be treated as a default and handed over for recovery, which does serious, long-lasting damage to your credit score.

Credit card late payment charges at major banks

Late fees are slab-based: the more you owe, the higher the fee. Here are the maximum late fees at some of India's biggest card issuers:

Bank

Maximum late payment fee

Notes

SBI Card

₹1,300 (on outstanding above ₹50,000)

Revised from 1 May 2026: ₹100 for outstanding of ₹100–₹500, ₹500 for ₹500–₹1,000. Extra ₹100 if the minimum due is missed two cycles in a row

HDFC Bank

₹1,300 (on outstanding above ₹50,000)

Charged once per billing cycle

Axis Bank

₹1,200

Extra ₹100 if the minimum due is missed two cycles in a row

All late fees attract 18% GST, so a ₹1,300 fee costs ₹1,534. Slabs vary by card and change from time to time, so check your card's MITC for the exact amounts.

What it costs to pay ₹50,000 late

Say your bill is ₹50,000, and you pay nothing until 10 days after the due date:

Charge

Approx amount

Late payment fee

₹1,300

GST on the late fee (18%)

₹234

Interest for a month at 3.75%

₹1,875

GST on the interest (18%)

₹338

Total extra cost

₹3,747

That's nearly 7.5% of the bill, plus a late payment mark on your credit report. Interest is usually calculated from each transaction date, so the real figure can be higher.

What to do if you've missed your credit card due date

  1. Pay at least the minimum due immediately. If you're still within 3 days of the due date, this avoids the late fee and the credit score hit.

  2. Pay the full amount as soon as you can to stop interest building up.

  3. Use a fast payment method. Pay through your bank's app or another instant method, so the payment credits quickly.

  4. Ask for a late fee waiver. If it's a one-off and you have a good payment record, call your bank and ask. Many banks will consider reversing the fee as a goodwill gesture, though it isn't guaranteed.

  5. Check your credit report after a month or two to make sure everything is reported correctly. If something's wrong, raise a dispute with the credit bureau.

How to never miss a credit card due date again

  • Set up auto-pay for at least the minimum due, so you're covered even if you forget.

  • Pay a few days before the due date, not on it.

  • Line up your due dates if you have several cards. Many banks let you change your billing cycle.

  • Keep a buffer in your account around your due dates, so the money is there when the bill is.

FAQs

What happens if I pay my credit card bill after the due date?

If you pay at least the minimum due within 3 days of the due date, there's no late fee and nothing is reported to credit bureaus. After that, the bank can charge a late payment fee, interest applies on the unpaid balance, and the late payment can be reported, which hurts your credit score.

I missed my credit card payment by 1 day. What happens?

Under RBI's 3-day rule, a payment that's only 1 day late shouldn't attract a late fee or be reported to credit bureaus, as long as you pay at least the minimum due within 3 days of the due date. You may still pay interest if you don't clear the full bill.

How much is the late payment fee on a credit card?

It depends on your outstanding balance and your bank. At major banks, it goes up to ₹1,200 to ₹1,300 for large balances, plus 18% GST.

Does a late credit card payment affect my credit score?

Yes, if it's more than 3 days late and the minimum due is still unpaid. The late payment is reported to credit bureaus and stays in your credit history for years.

Is the late fee charged on my full bill?

No. RBI rules say late payment charges can only apply to the amount still unpaid after the due date, not your total outstanding.

Can I get a credit card late payment fee waived?

Sometimes. If it's a one-off and you have a good payment record, call your bank and ask for a goodwill waiver. It's at the bank's discretion.

What is the due date on a credit card?

It's the last day to pay at least the minimum amount due without a late fee. It's shown on your statement, usually 15 to 20 days after the statement date.
