Best Credit Card for FASTag? Here's the Truth Nobody Tells You

Most guides to this topic promise a ranked list of the best cards for FASTag rewards. The honest answer is less exciting: FASTag is one of the most consistently excluded categories in Indian credit card reward programs, more so than rent, more so than utility bills. Before picking a card for this, it's worth understanding why almost nothing rewards it well, so you're not chasing a return that was never on the table.

Why FASTag recharges don't earn what you'd expect

When you recharge a FASTag, the transaction usually gets coded as a prepaid wallet top-up, not as a toll or transportation payment. Wallet top-ups are one of the most broadly excluded merchant categories across nearly every Indian card, the same exclusion that applies to loading Paytm, MobiKwik, or Ola Money. Since your FASTag recharge looks identical to a wallet load from the bank's system's perspective, it gets swept into that same exclusion, regardless of what the money is actually going toward.

The only scenario where a toll payment might code differently is a direct card swipe at a toll plaza counter, which falls under a transportation-specific merchant code and can earn standard rewards. This is now rare in practice since FASTag lanes have made cash and card payment at the barrier largely obsolete on most highways.

What specific cards actually say about it

The exclusion isn't a guess, it shows up explicitly in card terms once you look for it.

  • HDFC BizBlack: FASTag is named directly on the list of categories excluded from accelerated PayZapp rewards, alongside rent, housing, and education. It sits with wallet loads and government payments as a deliberate carve-out, not an oversight.

  • IDFC FIRST Mayura: FASTag doesn't earn zero, but it's downgraded hard, just 1 reward point per ₹150 spent, compared to 10 points per ₹150 on standard spend. That's roughly a tenth of the card's normal rate, low enough that it functions more like a token gesture than a real reward category.

  • General premium and mid-tier cards: Across HDFC, ICICI, and Axis, FASTag and similar transportation-adjacent wallet top-ups are commonly zeroed out or capped at a token rate in the fine print, even when the card's marketing doesn't call this out anywhere visible.

So is there any point using a credit card for this at all

Yes, just not for the rewards. A few reasons it can still make sense:

  • Cash flow: Like any credit card spend, a FASTag recharge on a card gives you the standard interest-free period before it's due, useful if you'd rather not draw down your bank balance immediately for a wallet top-up.

  • Consolidation: Keeping toll spend on a card you already track means one less separate balance (a FASTag wallet) to monitor for low-balance alerts.

  • The rare exception: If you occasionally still pay at a manual toll counter rather than through the FASTag lane, that specific transaction may earn standard rewards, since it isn't coded as a wallet top-up. This is a minor edge case, not something to plan a card strategy around.

What this means practically

Don't pick or switch a card specifically for FASTag rewards; the category isn't built to reward you regardless of which card you choose, and any guide claiming otherwise is likely rounding up a token 1-point rate into something that sounds more impressive than it is. If you're recharging FASTag regularly, treat it as a cash-flow and convenience decision, use whichever card you're already comfortable running routine spend through, rather than hunting for a "best" option that doesn't meaningfully exist yet.

Card terms do shift, though, and issuers have quietly changed exclusion lists before without much announcement. If a bank does start rewarding this category properly, that's exactly the kind of change worth catching quickly rather than assuming your card still works the way it always has. That's the sort of quiet terms change Wisor tracks across your cards, so if FASTag rewards do become a real option on something you're holding, you'll know before you've spent months not knowing it changed.
